A Russian citizen said in federal court that he tried to hire a Tesla employee to hack into the company’s systems, in order to steal confidential information from the computer network of the electric car manufacturer.

27-year-old Yegor Kryuchkov repeatedly tried to convince a Tesla employee at the company’s battery factory to participate in the hacking scheme, offering to pay this employee Bitcoins, in the amount of $ 1 million for running malware into the Tesla database.

During the trial, Kryuchkov agreed to plead guilty to “conspiracy to intentionally cause damage to a protected computer,” according to Insider. Kryuchkov’s sentencing is scheduled for May 10. He can spend up to 10 months in prison.

Kryukkov said the ransomware program would be disguised using a so-called distributed denial-of-service attack on a compromised system from the outside to overload servers with unwanted traffic, the Associated Press reported, citing court records.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said the unnamed recruit informed Tesla and cooperated with agents, and the plot was foiled before any damage was done.
